Producing your own German sentences is the moment everything you've studied has to work together: verb form, word order, articles, cases. These free games walk you through guided sentence assembly, so the choices start to feel routine before you make them out loud.
Most learners can recognize correct German long before they can produce it. Comprehension and production feed each other, and regular output is what most reliably narrows the gap. Guided sentence assembly asks you to make each choice - subject, verb form, article, case, word order - with the options in front of you, which is a step towards the workload of speaking rather than a replacement for it. Finish every round by saying or writing one new sentence of your own.
Start with simple SVO sentences (Ich esse einen Apfel), then add adverbials (Ich esse heute einen Apfel), then move to subordinate clauses (Ich esse einen Apfel, weil ich Hunger habe). Five minutes a day of guided sentence building, plus one sentence you produce from scratch, tends to move your speaking forward more than reading grammar tables.
Use prompts that force you to produce, not recognize. Picture prompts, English-to-German translation, and timed sentence-completion games all work well. The trick is to commit to a sentence - incorrect attempts teach you more than correct passive recognition.
Start simple: subject + verb + object (Ich trinke Kaffee). Add articles and cases (Ich trinke einen Kaffee). Add adverbials in time-manner-place order (Ich trinke morgens gern einen Kaffee zuhause). Then move to subordinate clauses with weil, dass, wenn - that's where verb-final word order kicks in.
Recognising a form and producing it are different skills with different practice needs. Reading and listening build a store you can draw on; producing sentences yourself is what makes that store available when you speak. Guided sentence building is a useful bridge - follow each round with one sentence you say or write without options.
